3D print shipping and packaging cost: price the box, not just the postage label

A shipping charge can recover the carrier label and still lose money. Complete fulfilment cost includes packaging supplies, packing labour, dimensional weight, replacement risk and any marketplace fee charged on shipping revenue.

The complete fulfilment formula

fulfilment cost = carrier label + box + protection + tape/label + packing labour + expected loss

expected loss = replacement cost x damage-or-loss rate

Use purchased unit costs, not shelf estimates. Divide a case price by usable units and include freight or tax in landed supply cost. Track damaged and lost orders separately; a new shop without history should label its allowance as an assumption, then replace it with its own data.

USPS dimensional weight changed on 12 July 2026

The USPS Postal Bulletin says Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage now use a dimensional-weight divisor of 139, with each parcel dimension rounded up to the next whole inch. USPS also says Ground Advantage retail prices remained unchanged in that update. This matters because a light model in a roomy box can be billed at a weight far above its scale weight.

Carrier eligibility rules decide when dimensional weight applies, so use the carrier's live quote for the actual origin, destination, dimensions and service. This calculation is a planning screen, not a postage quote.

Current US retail postage reference

The official USPS Notice 123, effective 26 April 2026, lists Ground Advantage retail prices by weight and zone. USPS confirmed those retail prices remained the same on 12 July. Examples from the current table are preserved in USD:

These are reference points, not promised checkout rates. Commercial platforms, negotiated accounts, Alaska/Hawaii destinations, surcharges and future price changes may differ. Preserve carrier prices in their source currency and do not silently convert them.

Worked seller example

Assume the seller's records show USD 10.65 for the label, USD 0.70 for a box, USD 0.35 for protection, USD 0.15 for tape and label, and 6 packing minutes valued at USD 18/hour. Assume a 2% damage-or-loss allowance on a USD 14 replacement cost.

USD 10.65 + 0.70 + 0.35 + 0.15 + (6 / 60 x 18) + (2% x 14) = USD 13.93

Charging only the USD 10.65 label leaves USD 3.28 unrecovered before any marketplace fee on shipping revenue. If a platform charges its percentage fee on the buyer's shipping payment, gross up the charge or recover the gap in the product price.

Packaging decisions that protect margin
