What does a resin 3D print really cost?

Resin price is only the visible part. A defensible quote also includes supports and waste, wash and cure energy, disposable supplies, finishing labour, machine wear and failed-print risk.

The resin cost formula

resin cost = estimated ml ÷ 1,000 × price per litrepower cost = printer kWh + wash/cure kWh, multiplied by tariffexpected unit cost = direct cost ÷ success rate

Illustrative example

Assume 80 ml at USD 35 per litre: resin is USD 2.80. Add USD 1.50 consumables, USD 0.14 total job/post-processing electricity, USD 1.10 machine wear, USD 3.75 labour and USD 1.50 packaging. Direct cost is USD 10.79. With an 8% failure rate, expected cost is about USD 11.73 before selling fees and profit.

Those are calculator defaults and arithmetic illustrations—not observed prices, measured power or a market benchmark. Replace them with your own supplier invoices and production records.

Safety and disposal are not optional overhead

Follow the resin manufacturer’s current safety data sheet, printer instructions, local ventilation requirements and waste-disposal rules. This costing guide does not provide chemical-safety or disposal instructions. Time, PPE and compliant disposal costs still belong in the business model.
